What are abandoned checkouts in Shopify?
If you run a Shopify store or any other e-commerce store for that matter, you’ll see abandoned checkouts in your store.
Even though you can see the customers’ addresses and names, their checkouts have not gone through. So, what does this mean? What are abandoned checkouts?
What are abandoned checkouts?
Abandoned checkouts refer to the checkouts that have not been completed by customers. It means that a customer added products to their cart, proceeded to the checkout page, but did not complete the payment process.
Even though these customers do not end up purchasing products, their emails and other details are left behind, as they have already entered them on the customer information details page during the checkout process.
This is great. It means you can use these emails in your email marketing campaigns to persuade these customers to complete their transactions.
Typically, customers might leave their transactions unfinished due to many reasons. Firstly, they might have changed their minds at the last step. Or secondly, they may not have been assured of the shipping method or price.
Sometimes, when customers get to the last step, they may not want to finish the purchase because they’d rather check similar options on other websites before placing an order.
The only way to find the reasons for abandoned checkouts is to engage with your customers.
Send manual emails to customers who abandon checkouts
You can manually send emails to your customers who have not completed their purchase. Here’s how to send them a link to their abandoned checkout.

If the customer goes on to complete their purchase, the recovery status will be updated with Recovered.
Set up automatic cart recovery emails
As well as sending manual recovery cart emails, you can set up automatic emails that will be sent to customers who abandon their cart.
