Create AMP pages for your Shopify store without a plugin

You’ve come to the right place if you want to know how to create accelerated mobile pages (AMP) for your Shopify store.

If you understand AMP well, you could try adding alternative liquid templates to your current Shopify theme, which would be AMP versions. Shopify’s guide on creating alternative liquid templates may help you here. If you do become stuck or unsure about how to create AMP pages, then contact a Shopify Expert or developer that can help you. It will require large amounts of redesign on your website and requires the skill to undertake.

Why is AMP important?

In 2016, Google launched the AMP project to make the mobile experience quicker and more enjoyable for web visitors. The load time appears instant for these pages, as AMP pages are cached and preloaded in search results. We do advise that AMP pages have strict guidelines on coding and file sizes, but these pages have shown to rank higher, therefore achieving better conversion rates, page views etc.

Google wants a consistent standard applied to web pages that deliver content to any phone, tablet or mobile device. There are differences in the HTML code when optimising for mobile. The standard <html>tag becomes <html amp>, allowing the browser to recognise the page as AMP content.

As AMP relates to faster loading of websites, you’ll have better opportunities to make more sales through your Shopify store. If a site loads slowly, more customers are likely to abandon their purchase, as they don’t want to wait. It’s key to keep your site load speed on mobile fast.

We do suggest that you get a Shopify Expert or developer that knows what they’re doing with AMP pages to help you. It can be tricky to understand what is needed to make your mobile site loading time quicker and can cause other issues to your store if you’re not careful.
