Shopify Revenue Checker
Check your Shopify revenue from real orders, not an estimate. Drop in an orders CSV export and get gross sales, discounts, returns, net sales, shipping, taxes and total sales, laid out the way Shopify Analytics reports them.

How to export your Shopify orders CSV
The orders export is the source of truth for Shopify revenue. It lists every order with its line items, discounts, shipping, taxes and refunds, which is exactly what the checker needs.
-
1
Open Orders in Shopify admin
Log in to Shopify admin and go to Orders. Filter the list first if you only want one sales channel or location.
-
2
Export the orders as CSV
Click Export, choose the date range or all orders, select CSV for Excel, Numbers, or other spreadsheet programs, then click Export orders.
-
3
Drop the CSV into the revenue checker
Drag the file onto the checker or browse for it. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
-
4
Read and reconcile the totals
Set the date range, review gross sales, discounts, returns, net sales, shipping, taxes and total sales, and compare them with Analytics → Reports → Total sales.
Large exports are emailed to the store owner instead of downloading. Upload the file as Shopify sends it: re-saving in Excel can change dates and number formats.
How Shopify calculates revenue
"Revenue" means different things in different reports. Shopify Analytics breaks it into gross sales, net sales and total sales. The checker uses the same definitions.
Gross sales
Line item price × quantity
What the products sold for before any discount or refund. Gift card sales are left out, because Shopify counts a gift card when it is spent.
Discounts
Gross sales − order subtotal
Discount codes, automatic discounts and line item reductions. The checker also lists the discount codes that cost the most.
Returns
Σ Refunded Amount
Money refunded on the orders in range. Shopify Analytics books a return on the day of the refund, so recent refunds on old orders land in a different month there.
Net sales
Gross sales − discounts − returns
Product revenue the store actually kept. This is the figure to use for margin, ad efficiency and growth.
Total sales
Net sales + shipping + taxes + duties
Everything customers paid, after refunds. It is the headline number on the Shopify Analytics dashboard.
Average order value
(Gross sales − discounts) ÷ orders
What a typical order is worth, using Shopify's AOV definition. Raise it and total sales grow without extra traffic.
Why your total may differ from Shopify Analytics
An orders export and the Analytics dashboard count the same money from different angles. These are the usual causes of a gap, and how to close it.
| Cause | What happens | How to reconcile |
|---|---|---|
| Refund timing | Analytics records a return on the refund date. The export attaches it to the order date. | Compare a full quarter, or export a wider range than the period you are checking. |
| Refunded shipping and tax | The export's Refunded Amount includes refunded shipping and tax. Analytics shows them under shipping and taxes. | Total sales still match; net sales here can be slightly lower. |
| Cancelled orders | Analytics keeps the original sale and records the cancellation as a return. | Tick “Include cancelled orders” to mirror that. |
| Unpaid orders | Pending payments (bank transfer, cash on delivery) count as sales in Analytics. | Tick “Include unpaid orders”. |
| Test orders | Orders placed with the Bogus Gateway appear in the export but not in sales reports. | Leave “Exclude test orders” on. |
| Time zone | Orders near midnight can fall on a different day depending on the store time zone. | The checker uses the store-local date written in the export. |
| Tax-inclusive prices | UK, EU and Australian stores often include tax in product prices. | Detected per order: tax is taken out of gross sales so it is not counted twice. |
| Multiple currencies | Exports list each order in its order currency. | Pick a currency in the filter; currencies are never mixed. |
Checking another store's revenue?
Shopify never publishes a store's sales. Tools that put a revenue figure on a competitor are estimating from traffic, ad activity or review counts, and there is no way to check how close they are.
What you can verify from outside is how a store is built. See which apps it runs and where it is losing conversions:
Buying a Shopify store? Verify the revenue
- Ask for an orders export covering the last 12–24 months, ideally exported live on a screen share.
- Run it here and compare total sales by month with the figures in the listing.
- Match those months against payouts from Shopify Payments or the payment provider.
- Look at returns, unpaid orders and test orders. Heavy refunds or a spike of unpaid orders deserve a question.
- Check top products and discount codes: is revenue concentrated in one item or bought with deep discounts?
